Better and brighter future for wellbeing group members

Since Access to Talking Therapies launched, Search has been dedicated to ensuring that the emotional wellbeing of over 50’s in the local community remains a priority. Project worker Kat Poland has strived to create and facilitate safe, confidential and friendly spaces for people waiting for counselling in addition to improving access to counselling services for those who otherwise, were unaware of the support available.

James (not his real name) was referred to our service in November 2023 when he struggled to leave home. With ongoing support from Search, Talking Therapies and compassion from his peers, James soon became a regular at the City Library Wellbeing Group. His dedication to attending and perseverance in his recovery has been remarkable. He now regards group members as ‘brothers and sisters’.

As James’ confidence grew he felt supported enough to express an interest in volunteering with Search, helping people with similar life experiences. Project worker Kat was pleased to introduce James to Search’s volunteering coordinator Aimi. We are delighted that he is now an active volunteer and we look forward to seeing what the future holds with new and exciting opportunities.

In July 2024, Carol (not her real name) visited Search Newcastle’s Pop in Centre and from there, gained access to our wellbeing support. Carol felt isolated, emotional, and her confidence hit rock bottom due to financial circumstances, sickness from work, and the loss of multiple friendships. When Carol first attended our support group in Kenton, this appeared to be extremely overwhelming. Kat made it a priority to make the group a safe space for the client and worked to link Carol to the relevant organisations and services that could help with additional worries and life pressures. Carol started to attend multiple groups including Mindfulness for Wellbeing. By December 2024, Carol’s personal development and mental health recovery was substantial. Within 5 months, she secured new employment, addressed her finances, and is waiting for formal counselling. It has been extremely encouraging to see such an incredible turnaround within this period. Carol’s partner and peers have described her as a ‘different person’, and she feels incredibly hopeful for her future, and remains a regular group member.
