West End Befrienders is a project which has been operating in the West End of Newcastle since 1984. The aim of the project is to provide a befriending and advocacy service to older people experiencing social isolation caused by health, language or cultural problems. It operates within the South Asian (Indian/Bangladeshi/Pakistani), and Chinese communities.

The work takes place in people’s homes as well in group settings. It provides exercise classes, film and reminiscence sessions, outings and help with medical appointments and shopping where appropriate.

WEB aims to improve the quality of life of older people, keep them in touch with their communities and help them engage with the world at large.

Befrienders are all local volunteers who make regular calls and act as friends to either support the people they visit in their own homes, or accompany them to access local services and facilities.
